Vision Statement

Engineering is a new vocational option subject that we are delighted to offer to Testbourne students.

This course provides an excellent platform for students to understand the different skills and disciplines within Engineering and an opportunity to develop precise practical and deigning skills. It combines scientific and mathematical knowledge with creative thinking where you can identify problems and produce new ideas that make the world better. Students who wish to study this course should have a natural curiosity as to how and why things are made and how problems could be solved.

WJEC Level 1/2 Vocational Awards (Technical Awards) is a new qualification that provide students with an opportunity to study and develop their understanding and application of Engineering.

This qualification forms an excellent foundation of skills and knowledge that will enable students to extend this subject further within a vocational pathway.

Engineering explores the following topics enabling students to develop their understanding, skills and knowledge.

  • Understanding and implementing Engineering drawings
  • Planning manufacturing
  • Using engineering tools and equipment
  • Proposing Design Solutions
  • Communicating an engineered design solution
  • Solving applied engineering problems
  • Understanding of engineering materials

This qualification is broken down into three distinct units.

Unit 1 provides students with the opportunity to interpret different types of engineering information to plan how to manufacture engineering products. Learners will develop knowledge, understanding and skills in using a range of engineering tools and equipment to manufacture and test a product.

Unit 2 Enables students to explore how an engineered product is adapted and improved over time, offering students the opportunity to apply their knowledge and understanding to adapt an existing component that they manufactured for Unit 1.

Unit 3 introduces learners to a range of considerations that impact on engineering design and how modern engineering has had an impact on modern day life at home, work and in society in general.

How it is assessed

Unit 1: Manufacturing Engineering Products Controlled assessment: 40% of qualification

Unit 2: Designing Engineering Products Controlled assessment:  20% of qualification

Unit 3: Solving Engineering Problems Written examination: time of exam - 1 hour 30 minutes 40% of qualification

As this is a brand-new course there is limited resources. Below is a link to the qualification specification
